At BeyondTheDecks, we don’t just share what makes cruising unforgettable—we also provide practical insights to help you navigate every voyage with ease. This blog post is designed to work in tandem with our YouTube channel, giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what really matters when packing for a cruise.
But this time, we’re doing things a little differently. Instead of general packing tips, I’m sharing the exact products I personally take on every cruise as a cruise director. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or preparing for your first river cruise, these are the essentials that I swear by—and they might just inspire your own packing list!
Each post in this series features an exclusive behind-the-scenes video, where I take you through my must-have travel items—why I bring them, how they make my job (and life) easier, and how they might benefit you as well. These are real recommendations based on my experience working and living on cruise ships.
After you watch the video, stick around! Below the clip, I’ll break down each product in more detail, explaining why I never board without them. Whether it’s tech to stay organized, gear for comfort, or smart solutions for travel efficiency, you’ll get an inside look at what keeps me prepared for every journey.
So, if you’re curious about how a cruise director packs, looking for some inspiration, or simply want to refine your own cruise essentials list, this post is for you.
Check out the YouTube clip below for a sneak peek into my must-have packing recommendations! Prefer to skip the video? Just scroll down to see the full list of products I use and why they make the cut.
Being a cruise director is a mix of thrill, chaos, and the occasional Wi-Fi battle. Between managing schedules, keeping guests happy, and somehow finding a moment to breathe, I rely on a few tech essentials to keep me organized, entertained, and powered up.
These are the 5 items I personally pack for every cruise, plus a few Apple alternatives for those who prefer them.
🎧 JBL Vibe Beam Wireless Earbuds – My Go-To for Music & Calls
Cruise ships can be loud. Whether it's guests chatting, the sound of the ocean, or an enthusiastic saxophonist warming up before the evening show, I need a way to focus.
The JBL Vibe Beam earbuds are my absolute go-to—they have great battery life, solid noise isolation, and never randomly disconnect when I step away from my phone. They’re perfect for listening to music while working, catching up on podcasts, or even just pretending not to hear someone calling my name from across the deck. (Kidding! Mostly.)
🍏 Apple Alternative: Some of my Apple-loving colleagues swear by the AirPods, especially for quick calls and seamless switching between Apple devices. If you’re an Apple user, you might prefer these:
📍 Apple AirTag – Never Lose Your Luggage Again
I might be an Android guy, but Apple nailed it with the AirTag.
I’ve had my bag disappear between two European ports, only to find it sitting in a crew storage area thanks to my AirTag. Without it, I would’ve spent two days in a gift shop T-shirt that said “Captain’s Favorite Passenger” (not ideal).
🔎 Android Alternative: If you’re not fully in the Apple ecosystem, the Tracker Universal Tag is a great alternative that works across multiple platforms. I keep one for backup tracking.
📚 Amazon Kindle Paperwhite – The Best Travel Companion
I love a good book. But I also love having space in my luggage for more important things (like actual work gear).
The Kindle Paperwhite is a lifesaver—it’s lightweight, waterproof, and the battery lasts forever. I can carry an entire library without taking up space, and it’s perfect for relaxing on deck or catching up on reading before bed.
🔋 Portable Charger – My Lifeline on Shore Excursions
Imagine this: 400 guests disembarking for a shore excursion, and my phone dies. No GPS, no contacts, no way to coordinate anything.
That’s why I never go anywhere without a portable charger. This one is compact, powerful, and reliable—which is exactly what I need when juggling tight schedules, last-minute changes, and making sure no one gets left behind at a port.
🎒 Bellroy Tech Kit – AKA The Marriage Saver
My wife got me this. Not because I asked for it, but because she was tired of my cables being everywhere—in my bag, on my desk, and (somehow) once in the fridge. (No idea how that happened.)
Now, my chargers, adapters, and random tech accessories all live in this sleek, organized case, and I am officially a more responsible human.
Lesson learned: Listen to your wife. It makes life so much easier. Happy Wife, Happy Life.
These aren’t just random gadgets—they’re my survival kit for life on a cruise ship. Whether it’s staying connected, organized, or just keeping my sanity intact, these items make my job so much easier.
If you’re a frequent traveler, a cruise enthusiast, or just someone who likes being prepared, these might just make your next trip smoother, too.
